4 Tips for Preparing Your Vegetable Garden

There are many benefits to planting a garden such as relieving stress, getting outdoor exercise, saving money on groceries and consuming more vegetables. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or planting vegetables for the first time, here are four tips to help you be successful.

1. Consider the Area

One of the most important aspects for unique herb and vegetable gardens Asheville NC is the location. Most vegetables need at least six to eight hours of sunlight to grow well. It’s best to choose a spot that gets the right amount of sunlight without blockage from trees and shrubs. If you can orient your garden from north to south, it’s ideal; however, if you need to plant from east to west, make sure that your taller plants don’t block the light to smaller plants.

2. Select Your Vegetables

While some gardening experts suggest starting with vegetables that are easy to grow, it’s best to plant the vegetables that you’ll actually eat. Radishes are easy to plant and harvest from seed, but if your family doesn’t like to eat them you may be wasting your time. Select vegetables that you love to eat and research the best way to help them grow. Remember that herbs and vegetables need three things: the right soil, plenty of sun and the right amount of water.

3. Obtain the Right Tools

As with any new activity that you try, gardening requires some specific tools to help you be successful. Here are some common gardening tools that you’ll need:

  • Shovel
  • Tiller
  • Irrigation system or watering can
  • Pruning shears
  • Trowel

4. Amend the Soil

Once you’ve selected the location and plants for your garden, it’s time to amend the soil. If you’re completely new to gardening, it’s a good idea to test your soil to see what type of amendments should be added. You want to make sure that the soil isn’t too heavy because you don’t want your plants to sit in water. You also don’t want the water to run off so you may need to create run-off barriers.

Adequately preparing your vegetable garden is necessary for a successful harvest. Take the time to follow these tips to increase your chance for success.
